BABY'S FIRST FUNERAL

Talking to kids about death and mourning through media

Often I’ve experienced an instinct in parents to hide Death and Grief from children until an undeniable event of death occurs. In some cases, as we see in sitcoms, parents will continue to hide death as a concept from children when a deniable event of death occurs, such as the death of a goldfish or small animal. Avoiding talking to children about various types of grief or dying can prevent them from building empathy when a friend goes through the death of a loved one or when the child themselves needs to navigate emotions when there has been a death in the family.

Books

Sometimes there is no better place to learn something than from the comfort of a caretaker's lap, or under a cozy blanket during storytime. These books have been thoughtfully written and illustrated to help talk about big things without making them feel so scary.

Movies and Media

How do you talk about death when grief steals your voice? Watching a film or playing a game with your child that features a character like them can be just as effective at validating their experience. Having that down time next to each other can offer time for your voice to find its way back to you.
